About Mystic Pizza
Mystic Pizza tells the story of 3 working-class girls who navigate the complexities of life, love, and family in a small-town pizza joint serving everyone from the townies to the privileged country club set. And what’s in that secret sauce, you ask? Wouldn’t you like to know!
You might remember the source film as the movie that launched the career of Julia Roberts, but the material (which Rustin renders faithfully), is more complex than the average movie romance. Set in a seaside Connecticut town, the story follows the Arujo sisters on their quests for love and self-actualization. Feisty Daisy (Kathryn Piche) and brainy Kat (Ryley Davis) couldn’t be more different…one’s a whip-smart but unmotivated drifter, the other a Yale-bound overachiever…but their divergent personalities can’t eclipse their tight familial bond. Along with best friend JoJo (Gracie McNeil), the girls sling pizzas under the watchful eye of mother-figure Leona (Laura Eamon).
In classic style, the narrative follows the trials and tribulations of the protagonists’ love lives. Daisy falls hard for the privileged Charlie Windsor (Ryann Pinkerton), only to wonder if his interest in her represents an act of rebellion against a snobbish family. The sheltered Kat begins a tentative flirtation with visiting architect Tim (Tanveer Pannu), which is complicated by the revelation that he’s married, however unhappily. And JoJo, afraid that marriage will get in the way of her goal to become a successful businesswoman, jilts her fisherman fiancé Bill (Karl Wright) at the altar. When Leona announces her intention to sell Mystic Pizza and retire, personal and professional complications dovetail, setting the plot in motion.
The infectious score featuring megahits of the ’80s and ’90s, from “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” to “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” and including songs originally recorded by Melissa Etheridge, Cyndi Lauper, John Cougar Mellencamp, Debbie Gibson, Wilson Phillips, The Bangles, Belinda Carlisle, Rick Astley, Bryan Adams, etc. will have your heart singing along.
